Legal Resources
MCBW works on issues related to the legal system in a variety of ways. The Coalition has participated in appeals on access to advocacy records, parenting time rights, and other domestic-violence related cases in the state and federal appellate courts. MCBW staff also work with the courts and other professionals in the legal system to ensure that they are responsive to the needs of battered women. In addition, the Coalition has developed a number of materials and resources for use by advocates and others as they navigate the legal issues related to battering.
MCBW also hosts monthly meetings of advocates, attorneys, and civil and criminal system practitioners. A listserv, currently consisting of 96 members, is maintained for this Domestic Violence Legal Advocacy for Women group. Sub-committees are formed as needed, and the group has taken on numerous collaborative projects including amicus briefs, appeals, and the creation of tools and resources for legal advocates and family law attorneys.
